Handling Payroll Corrections and Amendments

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Mistakes happen — and when they do, Atto Payroll makes it easy to correct them. Whether you need to fix an overpayment, adjust taxes, or make informational changes, here’s how to handle payroll corrections and amendments efficiently.

Common Scenarios That Require Corrections

1. Employee Overpayment

  • Current Quarter: Resolve in the next payroll run or request a void.

  • Previous Quarter: Requires a void and an amendment.

2. Employee Underpayment

  • Current Quarter: Fix with an off-cycle payroll or include it in the next payroll.

  • Previous Quarter: Requires a correction and amendment.

3. Wrong State Taxes Applied

  • Current Quarter: A void and payroll reissue are needed.

  • Previous Quarter: A void/correction and amendment must be filed.

4. Informational Updates

  • Current Quarter: Most updates can be made directly; some may require notifying tax agencies.

  • Previous Quarter: Usually requires a formal amendment.

Voids vs. Amendments – What’s the Difference?

What is a Void?

A void is used to reverse a payroll transaction when a payment or tax was issued incorrectly. Voids are typically used for current quarter issues and can often prevent the need for amendments.

How to Request a Void:

Submit a support ticket with the following details:

  • Reason for void – Overpayment, underpayment, tax error, or info update.

  • Quarter – Current or previous.

  • Employees impacted

  • Corrected amount (if applicable)

What is an Amendment?

An amendment corrects payroll mistakes after the quarter is closed. This includes tax filing errors or corrections to earnings, deductions, or tax withholdings.

How to Request an Amendment:

Submit a support ticket with:

  • Quarter involved

  • Agencies impacted (e.g., IRS, state, local)

  • Employees impacted

  • Corrected amount

Note: Amendments can take longer to process than voids due to additional review steps. But don’t worry — our team will help you stay compliant.
