Essential Documents for Payroll Setup

Updated over 3 weeks ago

To get started with Atto Payroll, you’ll need to gather a few key documents. These details are essential for tax reporting, compliance, and a smooth payroll experience.

1. Employer Identification Number (EIN)

Your EIN is a 9-digit number assigned by the IRS — required for reporting taxes and submitting official documents.

Where to Find It:

  • IRS Tax Forms: Look for your EIN on previously filed forms like Form 941.

  • IRS Letters or Notices: Any correspondence from the IRS will include your EIN.

  • IRS Online Account: Sign in to view your EIN and tax info.

  • Call the IRS: If needed, contact the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 1-800-829-4933. Be ready to verify your business info.

2. State or Local Tax ID Numbers

State and local tax IDs are needed for processing withholding, unemployment, and other tax filings.

Where to Find Them:

  • Quarterly Tax Documents: Review state withholding and unemployment tax forms for your ID numbers.

  • State Tax Department Website: Log in or reach out to your state’s department for confirmation or retrieval.

  • Previous Payroll Provider: Check any reports or onboarding documents they provided.

Missing a State ID?

If you’ve applied for a state ID but haven’t received it yet:

  • Use the “Applied for but not yet received” option during setup to proceed.

  • Once issued, update your ID in the system immediately to avoid penalties or delays in payroll tax filings.

⚠️ Important: Accurate tax IDs are required for compliance. Missing or incorrect information can result in late fees or rejected filings.
