Understanding and Managing Open Shifts

Updated over 2 months ago

Open Shifts in Atto allow employees to claim unassigned shifts based on their availability. This feature helps managers maintain flexible coverage while giving team members the option to pick up extra hours.

What Are Open Shifts?

Open shifts are created by managers and made available for any qualified team member to claim. They are useful when:

  • You don’t need to assign a specific person in advance

  • Additional coverage is needed on certain days or times

  • You want to let employees choose shifts that fit their availability

How to Create an Open Shift

  1. Go to the Scheduling page

  2. Tap the floating ➕ icon to begin creating a shift

  3. Enter the shift details:

    • Date(s)

    • Start and end times

    • Job site (optional)

  4. Toggle Open Shift ON

  5. Set the number of available spots

  6. Select a job code to define the role

| 📌 Open shifts must include a job code. Without one, the shift can’t be created.

Once saved, the open shift appears in the Open Shifts view.

How Open Shifts Work

  • Open Shifts View

Employees can browse available open shifts in this dedicated view.

  • Claiming Open Shifts

Employees can tap on any open shift to claim it. The shift will move to their My Shifts view automatically.

  • Notifications

Employees receive notifications when new open shifts are added, keeping them updated on available opportunities.

Why Use Open Shifts

  • Gives employees flexibility to pick up additional shifts

  • Helps managers quickly fill unassigned time slots

  • Ideal for dynamic or rotating schedules

Open shifts make scheduling more flexible — empowering employees to manage their time while ensuring full shift coverage for your team.
