How does GPS tracking in Atto work?

Real-time location tracking while on the clock is a great way to ensure employee safety, accountability and transparency. Account admins can decide to track a user's location in real-time while on the clock, on clock in/out only or not track it at all. The characteristics of each setting include:

  • While on the clock: Atto will track a user's location while they're clocked in. During this period, we monitor user movement and if we detect that a user has changed their current location, we track their travel routes, update their location in real-time and generate a comprehensive location history report that includes data on the time spent at specific job sites, time spent on the move, travel routes taken and more.   • On clock in/out: Atto will track a user's location only when they clock in and clock out and add those locations to their timesheet data. No other location data will ever be tracked, shared or monitored when this setting is set.
  • Never: Location tracking permissions are not required and users can clock in/out without sharing any location data.
In all instances, to ensure complete privacy and security, as soon as a user clocks out or is on a break, location tracking stops completely and no location data is shared between the device, Atto's servers or account admins.

For location tracking to work, users need to allow Atto access to their device’s location services. To do so:
On iOS:
  1. Open your device’s Settings app
  2. Go to Privacy > Location Services
  3. Select Atto from the list of apps
  4. Set Allow Location Access to “Always” or "While Using," depending on your account's settings.
  5. Enable "Precise Location"
NOTE: Location access is required to be set to “Always” to ensure maximum accuracy and reliability. Setting location access to “While Using the App” will not allow Atto to track a user’s location in real-time. 
On Android:
  1. Open your device’s Settings app
  2. Go to Security & Location > Location
    1. If you don't see "Security & location," tap Location
    2. If you have a work profile, before you tap Location, tap Advanced.
  3. Go to App Level Permissions
  4. Select Atto from the list of apps
  5. Set location access to "Allow all the time" or "Allow only while using the app," depending on your account's settings.
To ensure greater location tracking accuracy, turn on Wi-Fi or let your device look for Wi-Fi networks. Scanning for Wi-Fi helps find your device's location more accurately.
